Radon is a colourless, odourless, radioactive gas created by the natural decay of uranium in soil, rock and groundwater. A measurable amount of radon is found in every building, but exposure to high amounts over a long period of time can increase the risk of developing lung cancer. In fact, radon is the primary cause of lung cancer in non-smokers. It is important to note that all homes should be tested for radon and that radon levels can be reduced in any type of building, if they are found to be high.

Reducing lung cancer from radon starts with identifying where the risk is and looking at ways to reduce the risk. Take Action on Radon’s 100 Radon Test Kit challenge is a program designed to get people testing. Participants receive a free detector to test their homes for radon. Knowing your radon level is just the first step and then its time focus on how to reduce it if levels are found to be high. Take Action on Radon is now providing homeowners with an opportunity to receive a grant to reduce their radon exposure.

Participants in Golden’s 100 Radon Test Kit Challenge who tested their home and received a radon report showing levels were above 200 Bq/m3, are now eligible to receive a grant for reducing radon levels in their home.  The grant will provide each homeowner with $500 to put towards the cost of diagnostic testing and system design. One grant is available per household. Money will be paid directly to the Canadian National Radon Proficiency Program (C-NRPP) Mitigation professional who conducts the work.

The funds are available on a first come, first served basis while funding lasts.  Any homeowner in Golden who has completed a valid long-term radon test within the last 5 years and hasn’t previously installed a radon mitigation system is eligible to receive the grants.

Take Action on Radon's Grant program has a total of $10,000 available for funding. Once funds are paid out, no additional grants will be provided. Funding is only open from February 19, 2020 until October 1, 2020.
