June [XX], 2019 Dear Councillor [NAME], As a concerned resident in Ottawa and member of your constituency, I urgently request you to support your community’s requests to end the sale of single-use and foamed plastics in our municipal buildings. As you are aware, Ottawa has recently signed on with hundreds of other global cities to declare a climate emergency on our planet. Banning single-use plastics is a critical step we must take as soon as possible in our cities. Ottawa needs to demonstrate true leadership by doing what so many other leaders fail to do: be true to their word. Single-use plastics harm both the environment and our economy. Recycling is not the solution. While some of these items can be and are recycled, recycling levels of plastic bottles in Ontario are as low as 14%. On June 18, a motion, put forward by local councillor Catherine McKenney, was passed unanimously by the environment committee and calls on city council to: - develop a plan to eliminate single-use and foamed plastics in City programs and services - examine the elimination of discretionary single-use and foamed plastics in all of its contracted services, including the current contract with Coca-Cola for bottled water and pop - educate the public on the quality and accessibility of Ottawa's high quality municipal water The motion will go to the full council for vote on June 26, 2019. The environmental security of our city’s future is in your hands. I hope you will lead the way for creating a better Ottawa and vote in favour of this motion on June 26. Sincerely, [Your Name and postal code]
