Unifor Long-term Care Homes Staffing Level Survey Logo
  • Unifor Long-term Care Homes Staffing Level Survey

This survey was created for all Unifor nursing homes and homes for the aged bargaining units to determine the actual hours of care per day per resident Nursing homes report these numbers to the Ministry but that information is not publicly available and certainly could be inflated. In fact we have no way to know if the employer is including paid time when someone is off the job, like vacation or sick time.  They may also include staff who are not involved in direct care. We need this information so that we have our own data to refute the inflated numbers the employer may provide us.
  • lnstructions

    1. One survey per home is required and should be completed by the chairperson or alternate who is familiar with the normal staffing on each unit.
    2. For all hours, use the regularly paid hours but do not include any paid hours where staff are not physically at work (ie. sick or vacation)
    3. Staffing for all nursing hours, RAI hours and BSO hours are calculated for the entire facility as their duties often overlap beyond one or more units.
    4. Staffing for personal care workers is calculated by individual unit.  The online form will accommodate as many units as you indicate are needed.
    5. If there are irregular staff numbers on specific days, please calculate as if they were spread over 7 days. (ie.  One RN from Monday to Friday for 4 hours would equate to 2.86 hours; 4 hours x 5 days = 20 hours divided by 7 days equals 2.86 hours.)
    6. Do not include staff not involved in direct care or staff who are involved in resident rehabilitation or recreation.
    7. If you have any questions please contact your local union or your service representative.
