• Student Attitudes toward (Musical) Group Environments

Adapted for Music, Researcher Joel Windsor
  • This questionnaire is part of a study being conducted by Joel Windsor, MME, RMT. The purpose of this study is to assess the development of performance skill, musical knowledge, and in this particular instance, collaboration and the impact that beginning band in different grade levels in different schools has. I want to find out how you think, feel and behave when working with other students to learn musically.
The results from this research will be used to identify the most appropriate grade level to begin instruction in concert band methods. Also, it is expected that information from this study will also demonstrate how collaborative learning is encouraged from participation in concert band over time.

    Please be informed:
    - This is not a test; there are no right or wrong answers.
    - Your answers will be kept confidential.
    - Your teacher will not see your individual responses to any of the questions.
    - Your answers will not affect your grades in any way.
    - You are free to discontinue at any time.
Please answer the items as honestly as possible. To complete this test, you will need a testing code from the Anonymous Subject Tool (AST).  Please log into the AST at data.windyjmusic.com and find your code, or generate your code there first prior to proceeding.

Your cooperation in completing this questionnaire is greatly appreciated. Thank you for your support.

  • This questionnaire asks about your attitudes toward group learning in a music classroom.  Use your experiences from last year's music classes to answer these statements.  If you had no music classes last year, consider any class last year where you worked in groups.

Whenever there is a statement about group members, other students, etc., think of the students who have been in your music classes from Grade 6.  If you are the lone musician in your "section", consider your section to be the students who would sit closest to you playing similar parts.

For each of the statements, circle the answer that most closely corresponds to how you think and feel about the statement.

    The Response Scale is as follows;

    1. Strongly Disagree
    2. Disagree
    3. Undecided
    4. Agree
    5. Strongly Agree

If you strongly disagree with the statement, choose 1; if you disagree with the statement, choose 2; if you cannot decide, or feel in between, choose 3; if you agree with the statement, choose 4; and if you strongly agree with the statement, choose 5.
